February 21, 2007 MEETING
MINUTES FOR GULF COAST BACKWATER PADDLERS The February meeting of the Gulf Coast Backwater Paddlers started at 7:00 pm on February 21, 2007 at the Backwater Outfitter’s Store in Matlacha on Pine Island. Diane LaPell and Steve Catron open the meeting and had the members and guests introduce themselves and the meeting of February 21, 2007 began. The first item presented were trips taken since the last meeting. Guest speaker John Paeno did a presentation on his Calusa Ghost Tours in his 14 man seat canoe and brought with him his artifacts such as Marco masks, bows, sharks tooth knives. He told us stories about the Calusa Indians and blew on his conch shell horn. He is a very interesting and it is well worth going on his ghost tour. The
next item presented were review of the events to come. Backwater Outfitters Demo
Day scheduled for Saturday, February 24 at Cape Coral Yacht Club and will go on
from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Diane LaPell is doing a trip from Four Freedoms Park,
Cape Coral and will be meeting at 1:30 pm and launching at 2:00pm. In March
there is the Collier Seminole Camping, Kayaking and
Hiking trip on the March 23rd weekend with the Space Coast Paddlers
from Melbourne Fl. Need to make those reservation as soon as possible if you
plan on going . Steve Catron brought up facts of mapping the shoreline. That is surveying the entire shoreline within the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program. They are looking for volunteers to assist in the survey. Please contact Jaime Boswell 239-338-2556 if you are interested in helping out. The web site is moving along thanks to Rusty Batchelor so go to the site and check it out. Good job Rusty. Being safe on the water is one of the most important topics. We went over kayak rules for leaders and gave tips of safe paddling. You can go the web site for tips on being a leader, waivers and general safety. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
