MEETING MINUTES

January 17, 2007

This was the first meeting of 2007 and we all decided that the club is moving along quite well.  We started the meeting at 7pm by introducing ourselves and then having the new recruits introduce themselves.  New to the roster are Jim Vaigl, Dick Mullins, Rick Amlin, and Al and Sue LaPlante.

Lynette Brown our Safety Office, was not able to attend but sent an article on PFD Safety.  All of us decided that when we have club trips, PFD’s would be required by all.  She is also going to give us ACA safety courses soon as the weather and water gets warmer.  These lessons will be free to club members and a fee for those who are not members.

Rusty Batchelor who is the Webmaster, introduced himself and once again told everyone to check out the website.  Lots of info could be gained by using the site.  Eventually, club members will be the only ones able to access the main part of the site.

Yona Munro who is the club Treasurer now has a POB address and Steve is letting the store number be the main club number for people to contact us.  She also has a bank account set up for dues and dues are starting to come in.  She will give progress reports at the meetings.

Old trips mentioned were Dec 17 on the Orange River led by Carol Hodges and Yona.  Dec 18 many of us went to Ding Darling in Sanibel for the monofilament cleanup.  Jan 13 there was another trip on the Orange River, which was led by Diane LaPell.

January 2, Steve Catron and Lynette Brown led a trip on Fisheating Creek, which is in Palmdale.  Susan and John Reekie paddled around Matlacha again and the Fisher’s explored Hancock Creek.

New activities and trips are the Demo Day with Backwater Outfitters on Feb. 24 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.  Also Diane told everyone to get reservations in if they wanted to do the Collier Seminole Camping, Kayaking and Hiking trip on the Feb 23rd weekend with the Space Coast Paddlers from Melbourne Fl.

Betsy Clayton, Waterways Coordinator from Lee County came by with a great deal of information for all of us.  She emphasized the need for float plans along with many other safety tips.  She is sending me e-mails to pass on to you on other activities in the Lee County area for all of us to join in on.  Thanks to Betsy for coming by and hopefully she will return soon.

Steve brought up the October Blueway Festival, which will be the 2nd Annual.  Our club will definitely be involved in this event.  One idea was for us to have our own monofilament cleanup in the Matlacha area.   More ideas from all of you will also be appreciated as we go along.

All in all our first meeting of our new club in 2007 was very informative and productive.  We need to get more trips going within the club.  Also dues will be due for the majority of the group by the end of March.

The meeting adjourned at 9:05 and those who could went on to Bert’s for a fun filled social hour.
